Tell it to Sun.Star: SSS pension adjustment

THIS refers to the letter of Ms. Cherry Adelfa about pension adjustment that was published in Sun.Star Cebu on June 14, 2016.

We would like to inform you that the Social Security System (SSS) implemented the1985 to 1989 contributions reposting project only for those members who were affected by the system upgrade in 1986. Due to applicable posting rules and disk space limitation after the system upgrade, member contributions and credited years of service (CYS) in excess of latest six years contributions had to be reposted.

The SSS created a special Task Force in July 2011 to convert microfilmed R3s into digitized format, re-encode and post all contributions for the period 1985 to 1989. Completed in 2015, the SSS is now starting the process of adjusting pensions for the qualified members and beneficiaries based on the results of the posting.

We did not announce this publicly because not all pensioners are affected and we have been in the process of reposting. However, the reposting program took longer than we expected as we had to conduct thorough verification of records to determine the actual computation of the monthly pension.

Under a special project, we have finished reposting the contributions and we have started the payment process this month for qualified retiree-pensioners. Qualified pensioners for death and disability will be paid on or before December 2016.

Pensioners who did not file any request will automatically receive adjustments if qualified. Those who will receive adjustments should expect to get a letter-notice sent via mail. This includes information on total amount of pension adjusted based on reposted contributions, months covered, withdrawal date, and the adjusted pension amount including dependent’s pension, if any.

The pension differential will be deposited in the bank account where the pensioner receives the monthly pension. Pensioners without bank accounts will be paid via check.

Thank you and we hope we are able to enlighten you on this matter.--Marissu G. Bugante, Vice President, Public Affairs and Special Events Division
