Swift, Hiddleston: Real or PR stunt?

TWO weeks after her breakup with Calvin Harris, Taylor Swift shocked the public with photos of her and Tom Hiddleston making out in Rhode Island. With Swift moving on like a speed of a bullet, and rising star Hiddleston being hotly gossiped as the next James Bond, is this some sort of publicity stunt to benefit the two? Or could it be that the two fantastic showbiz celebrity have something real.

He is known as Loki in the worldwide box-office hits Thor and Avengers. He is also rumored to be the next James Bond in line with other British actors, Idris Elba and Aidan Turner. On the other hand, she is already a successful singer at the age of 26. She is labeled as the girl who writes songs about her ex-boyfriends and gather awards for it in the music industry. With their last names combined, the budding love tandem is called Hiddleswift.

It may sound like one of JK Rowling’s spells but these two have some serious things going on: Swift and Hiddleston’s make-out photos spread out like a virus in the social media world gathering different comments and opinions from the netizens.

Some sources believe that Swift is only using Hiddleston to show the public she is over her Scottish ex-boyfriend Harris, who dumped her last June 1. Others claim that she just wants to divert the public’s eye after Kim Kardashian insinuated in an interview that Swift loves to “play the victim.”

It worked. Because as soon as Kardashian’s GQ interview hit the news stands, nobody was talking about it because UK’s tabloid The Sun had the first proof of the Hiddleswift romance.

Kardashian was referring to the re-ignited beef between her husband Kanye West and Swift. In 2009, West interrupted Swift during her acceptance speech in the MTV Video Music Awards, complaining to the audience that Beyonce should have won the award. They reconciled years later. But the fire was re-ignited this year when West’s song Famous was released. It includes the lyrics: “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex. Why? I made that b*tch famous.”

Kardashian, in defending West, said Swift knew about the song lyrics and even approved it.

But if West is singing about Swift, it’s just a case of the pop singer getting a dose of her own medicine. She is famous for writing songs inspired by ghosts of her past relationships with Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner, Jake Gyllenhaal, John Mayer, Harry Styles, Connor Kennedy and Harris, among others.

Jonas and the singer broke up over a 27-second phone call in 2008. Swift sang about her relationship with Jonas in Last Kiss and Better than Revenge.

A year later, Swift worked on a song with Mayer called Half of My Heart. Less than a year later, Swift released a song about Mayer aptly titled Dear John. Apparently, while working on Half of My Heart, Swift, then 19, and Mayer, then 31, had a brief fling.

Mayer was Swift’s first mature relationship, which prompted her to declare on Dear John: “I see it all now that you’re gone. Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with? The girl in the dress, cried the whole way home, I should’ve known.”

But it didn’t take Swift long to find a Mayer replacement. Lautner and Swift’s relationship was known as Taylor Squared since they share the same first name. They met on the set of Valentine’s Day and broke up in 2010. She wrote the apology song Back to December for him but they never got back together.

In the same year, the singer was linked to Oscar-nominated actor Gyllenhaal. He reportedly spent $160,000 to fly the singer on a jet to their date; but broke up with her through a text message. Fans can’t stop guessing that the song All Too Well is about Gyllenhaal because of the lyrics: “And I left my scarf there at your sister’s house. And you’ve still got it in your drawer even now.” Throwing in the word “sister” is just too suspect since Gyllenhaal has a famous older sister—actress Maggie Gyllenhaal.

After Gyllenhall, there was Kennedy, whom Swift dated in 2012. Kennedy was just 18 at that time and Swift was 22. They reportedly broke up because of their age difference and the long-distance issue. Her unreleased Stay Stay Stay song from the Red album is reportedly an ode to her brief fling with Kennedy.

Then there’s Styles from One Direction. Styles and Swift’s brief relationship was scrutinized by the media. It was already on a rocky road from the beginning and Swift sang about it in I Knew You Were Trouble.

With Styles, Swift again got a dose of her own medicine when One Direction released the song Perfect, which Styles co-wrote. The lyrics, “And if you like cameras flashing every time we go out. And if you’re looking for someone to write your breakup songs about. Baby, I’m perfect” reeks so much of Swift.

After her high-profile relationship with Styles, Swift stayed single for over two years until March 2015, when good friend Ellie Goulding introduced her to DJ and music producer Harris. Fifteen months later, the infamous breakup. Two weeks later, Hiddleswift.

Swift gained a new title, at least in the Philippine Twitterverse: Patron saint of moving on.

But there’s no need to feel sorry for Harris. He is doing just fine—posting shirtless photos of himself on Snapchat, making hit songs with Rihanna and making money off his DJ sets.

But with a long list of Swift’s ex-lovers, can the public actually believe that Hiddleswift is the real deal? Or should bookmakers start taking bets on how long this relationship lasts?

Oh well. The public can just sit back, relax, and see how Hiddleswift unfolds. Nicole Delorino, UPVTC Intern
