Utzurrum: Cultural fare: Art and cuisine

AT last, the country’s celebrity doctor couple “to the stars,” Manny and Pie Calayan, are opening their one-and-only, true clinic in Cebu, Sunday, July 3, 3 p.m. at SM Seaside City. Expect a beauty blast with movie stars galore in person!

Doctors Manny and Pie are excited to share with Cebuanos their secrets to wholistic dermatology and cosmetic surgery with both doctors hands-on during treatment.

Despite establishing their Calayan Surgicentre brand all these years, the couple decided to change their brand name to Drs. Manny and Pie Calayan Clinic, to distinguish themselves from unauthorized clinics operating under the Calayan name.

It was a backbreaking task for the chefs of Marco Polo Plaza Cebu, to prepare the various regional cuisines from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. They not only researched, but actually traveled the islands to secure the best-loved dishes, as they presented “Independencia Luzvimin.” This foodfest ran from June 10 to 16, to celebrate our country’s Independence Day last June 12.

Under the expert craftsmanship and creativity of culinary guru Jessica Avila, we got to savor KBL (kadios, baboy, langka) from Bacolod, La Paz Batchoy from Iloilo, kare-kare, bagnet from Luzon, Bicol express, sinuglaw, the popular tuna panga from Davao etc.

To add flavor and pizzazz to the event, designer Dexter Alazas presented his modern Hablon collection in cool aqua-blues and hot pink hues. Very wearable!

Kudos to Marco Polo and culinary consultant Jessica for another smashing culinary journey!

When you have an artist in the family, you’re lucky. But when you have three, you’re thrice blessed!

As in the case of the Syjuco family, three female siblings are in the multimedia scene!

This gave rise to the three-woman show, Las Tres Marias which recently wowed Cebuanos at the Qube Gallery in Banilad, Cebu City.

The exhibition highlighted their various styles and individualilty: Michelline dabbled in hand-torched brass sculpture, while Beatrix’s highly texturized abstract paintings were definite eye-catchers! Maxine’s mixed-media visual narratives and installations attracted their own fans.

Let’s have more of these “tres chic” siblings, we told gallery owner, Maris Holopainen!
