DOT-Western Visayas pushes for children tourism safety

ILOILO CITY –- The Department of Tourism through its Western Visayas office is pushing for child safety as the tourism industry is picking up in the region.

DOT-Western Visayas Regional Director Helen Catalbas said the safety of children is a primordial concern of the tourism industry as the agency holds a Child Safe Tourism Orientation and Seminar June 30, at Amigo Terrace Hotel, Iloilo City.

The Child Safe Tourism Program aims to establish policy and practices towards ensuring a protective environment for children in tourism destinations and DOT affiliates with tourism industry partners in making sure active steps of ensuring children protection against exploiters are implemented.

“Tourism brings billions of tourist receipts every year attracting, among others, exploiters to operate. Children are very vulnerable to this modus and it is of utmost importance that we protect our children against these abusers”, Catalbas said.

Participants to the seminar include DOT-accredited tourism operators in Western Visayas and other national government agencies, tourism officers, stakeholders and other players in the industry.

Participants are to learn and understand the content and impact of the 7 travel tips in the Philippines, impact of travel and tourism on the protection of children, and ways on how tourism stakeholders and frontliners and other duty bearers can protect and report abuses on children’s rights.

Lily Flordelis and Eva Marie Monter of Balay Tuluyan Philippines expounded on challenges to children’s rights that involve case studies on streetchildren, voluntourism, child labor, custody of children and sexual exploitation.
