Diocese maintains stand vs. penalty

THE Diocese of Bacolod is firm in its stand against the re-imposition of death penalty.

Rev. Fr. Felix Pasquin, rector of San Sebastian Cathedral and head of the Diocese Social Communications, said whether it is done by a criminal or a legitimate person of authority, killing is always forbidden under God’s fifth commandment.

Pasquin said he worried of President Rodrigo Duterte’s previous statement that the death penalty will serve as “retribution” for those aggravated by crimes.

“That is reserved only to God,” the priest said, adding that the sacredness of human life will be put at stake, if the bill is passed.

"Retribution by God can either be entrance to eternal happiness in paradise, or eternal damnation in hell," he added.

Pasquin made the statement in reaction to the announcement of Senator Manny Pacquiao that he has filed a bill in the Senate re-imposing capital punishment by hanging for heinous crimes.
