THE Cebu Provincial Government and the Municipality of Daanbantayan agreed to work together for the rehabilitation of the Monad Shoal off Malapascua Island, which incurred heavy damage after a cargo vessel ran aground there nearly a month ago.
Daanbantayan Mayor Vicente Loot earlier met with Gov. Hilario Davide III to inform the governor of the municipal government’s intention to participate in the rehabilitation process along with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO).
“I don’t want to see my boss doing my job. Dapat ang mangulo ana sa trabaho ang tua sa jurisdiction. Mao na akong point in asking co-chairmanship (The one who should head in doing the job are those who are in the area. That’s my point in asking for co-chairmanship),” Loot said.
Loot said a consultation will be held among the fishermen and the business locators in Malapascua to hear their opinions and concerns.
Fishers in Daanbantayan were not directly affected when m/v Belle Rose ran aground in Monad Shoal last month because it is not a fishing site. The accident, however, damaged at least three hectares of coral reefs.
Loot said that Monad Shoal has been declared a marine sanctuary by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
Loot said that in the rehabilitation of the Monad Shoal, the fishers of Daanbantayan should be the frontliner.
“Even if wala’y expertise ang fisherfolks (in the rehabilitation), but they can learn,” Loot said.
To the cargo vessel, Loot said he has no other demands other than compensation and rehabilitation.
Loot said that the diving business in Malapascua was not affected by the damage because the diving spot is located a kilometer from the shoal. Elisha Judy P. Tabaque, UP Cebu Intern
