Ballet Philippines performs at SM Lanang Premier

Dabawenyo ballet fans were treated to an event of an exclusive and remarkable performance by the Ballet Philippines as they staged an hour show for free at SM Lanang Premier on July 3.

Dubbed as “BP in Blue,” the country’s flagship professional dance company showed off their prowess in classical ballet and contemporary dance in a two-part showcase.

The first part presented highlights from “Sarong Banggi,” a contemporary ballet performance about the Filipino family with music orchestrated by Ryan Cayabyab, and costumes created by fashion designer Rajo Laurel.

The second part, on the other hand, featured a diverse range of Filipino choreography, which includes Alden Lugnasin’s “Bayan Ko” and “Dulce Estranghera,” Eraserheads’ “Ang Huling El Bimbo,” as well as key works by the young choreographers of Ballet Philippines.

The Ballet Philippines is founded in 1969 by National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes with the support of renowned dancer Eddie Elejar.

A resident company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, it is widely recognized today as a cornerstone of contemporary Filipino identity. BP has been known worldwide for its repertoire of classical and modern pieces.

Amid the fact that their performance was based on classical music, it can still be observed that both the young and no-so-young members of the audience truly enjoyed it. In fact, my two-year-old girl even tried to imitate the movements of the Ballet Philippines’ dancers.

The “BP in Blue” show in Davao was co-presented by Air Asia.

Special thanks to Ms. Acey Puno-Reyes of SM Lanang Premier for providing the photos!
