A TOTAL of 78,706 senior citizens in Western Visayas are currently enjoying the social pension of P1,500 each, covering three months of the second quarter this year.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development Assistant Regional Director Evangeline Felecio said the government provided P472.23 million for the region and the amount is being delivered by postmen of the Philippine Postal Corp in door-to-door services in the cities and municipalities of the region.
The Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 spells out the qualifications to social pension beneficiaries that covers 60 years old and above, those without livelihood, those without families that provide their food, and those not receiving pensions from government institutions like the SSS, GSIS and PVAO.
In Iloilo City, there are 1,370 registered elderlies who will receive their three months pension of P1,500 each within this month. The deliveries are ongoing for the beneficiaries amounting to P8.2 million.
On the other hand, DSWD reported that two barangays in the municipality of Lambunao, Iloilo were selected as pilot areas for its project.
These villages were Gines and Maribong since they had the most number of senior citizens in the municipality, Felecio said.
The other selected pilot areas are San Carlos City in Pangasinan for Region I, Maco, Compostela Valley for Region XI and Valenzuela City for the National Capital Region.
This program strived to reach other inaccessible towns.
The Philippine Plan of Action for senior citizens gave priority to community-based approaches which are gender-responsive with participative senior citizens in decision making process.
On the other hand, the Social Technology Agenda for 2015-2020 aims to reduce incidence of elderly abuse cases by 2017.
Felecio said that elder abuse is a widespread problem throughout the world. In the Philippine context, elder abuse is a hidden problem of society where cases involved emotional and deprivation of food.
Of the 7 million senior citizens, only 618 cases of elderly abuse were reported.
