Catholic church ready to provide counselling to reform drug users

A MANILA priest said the Church is ready to provide counseling and spiritual guidance to help drug dependents who are willing to change.

Fr. Jerome Secillano of Nuestra SeƱora del Perpetuo Socorro Parish in Sampaloc, Manila said that counselling is the only contribution the clergy can provide to those who are formerly using drugs.

"The church may not be able to provide the infrastructure for rehabilitating drug dependents but since rehabilitation requires a holistic intervention, the church can provide counselling and spiritual direction geared toward a deep understanding of life, its travails and meaning," he said in an interview.

The Catholic priest said that they will also extend such to the families of those who want to lead a new life by abandoning their dependency on illegal drugs.

"The church may also intervene by doing the same for the families of dependents who may have also been thoroughly affected by the situation," he said.

Secillano added: "Priest can either go to the house of the individual or the individual go to the parish."

Many drugs dependents have responded to the call of President Rodrigo Duterte to surrender in order for the government to help them through its rehabilitation programs. (FP/Sunnex)
