Hero dog Kabang visits Davao City

THE hero dog Kabang from Zamboanga City, who hogged the headlines in 2011 after saving a nine-year-old girl and her three-year-old cousin from being run over by a motorcycle is in Davao City, visiting, as part of his tour around the country to advocate against animal cruelty.

Kabang paid a courtesy call with her human companions at the City Hall on Tuesday, July 12.

Kabang is the pet of Rudy Bunggal. It was in December 2011 when Bunggal’s daughter Dina and her young cousin Princess Diansing were crossing the street near their house without noticing ann approaching motorcycle that was speeding toward them. Kabang jumped at the motorcycle, knocking it down.

In the process, the dog’s snout was crushed. The family refused to take her down and instead continued to care for her despite the difficulty of eating.

Kabang’s life, however, was put in danger as the wide wound became infected and the Bunggals could not afford veterinary care and facial surgery for her.

In February 2012, a grassroots fundraiser called Care for Kabang was launched by US nurse Karen Kenngott who learned of Kabang’s fate through the internet. But it was only in March 2013 when she finally underwent surgery as several other diseases had to be cured.

Four and a half years later, Kabang is hale and healthy.
