Veco upgrades schools’ wiring system for safety

THE Visayan Electric Company (Veco) continues to provide a safe environment for students within its franchise areas almost six years after the launching of its schools’ rewiring project.

At present, Veco has rewired and upgraded the electrical wiring systems of 57 schools.

“The outdated electric wire maze of some public schools poses a danger. Damaged, old wiring is one of the most common causes of fires,” said lawyer Jill Verallo, Veco Reputation Enhancement head.

A few weeks ago, four more schools benefited from the Veco rewiring projects. These schools were Opao Elementary School in Mandaue City, Tugbongan Elementary School in Consolacion town, and Sangat Elementary School and Balud Elementary School, both in San Fernando town.

Two more rewiring projects will soon be turned over to two schools in Barangays Pitalo and Balud, San Fernando.

Before the year ends, five schools will also benefit from the Veco’s rewiring project.

Veco aims to complete 17 school rewiring projects for this year, with 821 classrooms. Each rewiring project costs Veco an average of P1 million.

Since the project launch in 2010, Veco already safety-stamped 2,017 classrooms in 57 schools in its service area.

The company powers the cities of Cebu, Mandaue, Talisay, Naga and four municipalities of the greater part of Metro Cebu-Liloan, Consolacion, Minglanilla and San Fernando.

A total of P29.972 million, including the budget for the 2016 projects, has been allocated for the upgrading of school electrical system.

“The selection of school beneficiaries is done after a survey by Veco. Most of them are also endorsed by the Department of Education,” said Verallo.

Apart from upgrading electrical lines, Veco also installs energy-saving LED light bulbs in the school beneficiaries’ classrooms.
