2 Iloilo councilors unable to get committee seats

TWO Iloilo City councilors from the opposition were unable to get any assignment of the 28 working committees of the City Council in the unanimous resolution approving the chairmanship, vice chairman, and member of the standing committees for 2016-2019.

During the second regular session on July 12, city councilors Joshua Alim and Plaridel Nava, both ran under the opposition party, United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) of former Vice President Jejomar Binay, expressed dissatisfaction with the City Council ruling and admitted they have to work on as city councilor without a working committee.

Both claimed they will continue to be the vocal fiscalizer at the council and will attend meetings when called for participation of the committee as a whole.

Majority of the city councilors ran under the Liberal Party including council presiding officer, Vice Mayor Jose Espinosa III.

Councilor Eduardo Penaredondo, a lawyer, will continue as the Floor Leader with councilor RLeone Gerochi as Assistant Floor Leader.

Penaredondo was also chairman of the Committee on rules, ordinances, resolutions, style, justice and legal affairs; while Gerochi, also a lawyer, was chairman of the Committee on public services, environmental protection and ecology, transportation, energy and utilities, and good government and public accountability.

Councilor Ely Estante Jr. got the chairmanship of the Committee on engineering, construction and public works, agriculture, fisheries, aquatic and natural resources.

Councilor Mandrie Malabor took the Committee on markets and slaughterhouse, and the games, amusement and professional sports.

Councilor Candice Magdalane Tupas with the Committee on health, sanitation, and hospital services, and the trade, commerce and industry.

Councilor Jose Efrain Trenas III got the chairmanship of the Committee on cooperatives and livelihood, and on urban poor, human rights and minority groups.

Councilor Lady Julie Grace Baronda has the Committee on education, science and technology, social services and disaster relief, information technology and computerization, and youth and sports development.

Councilor Liezl Joy Salazar holds the Committee on domestic and international relations, and on women and family relations.

Councilor Jeffrey Ganzon on Committee on moral recovery, and on police, fire, penology, public safety, order and security, dangerous drugs and rehabilitation,

Councilor Armand Parcon received the Committee on veterans, retirees, elderly and disabled persons, labor, employment, manpower development and placement; and on communications and public information.

Councilor Reyland Hervias was assigned on the Committee on ways and means, barangay affairs and community development. (LCP/Sunnex)
