LGUs in first district are not into drugs

CONGRESSMAN Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas (Cebu, first district) said he can vouch for the integrity of the mayors and vice mayors in the first district that they are not involved in the illegal drug trade.

He assured that all high-ranking elected officials under his district are active in the campaign against illegal drugs.

Gullas issued the statement after President Rodrigo Duterte announced his plan to disclose the names of some mayors and other local government unit (LGU) officials who are allegedly involved in illegal drug operations.

Gullas told reporters yesterday that the mayors of the towns of Minglanilla, San Fernando and Sibonga and cities of Talisay, Naga and Carcar are doing their best to curb illegal drug activities in their localities.

Gullas, however, said that the fight against illegal drugs is not just the job of local government officials.

He believes that it is high time that Congress passed laws that will provide more funding for the campaign against illegal drugs, including logistics for government-run drug rehabilitation centers and for the construction of more rehabilitation centers.

Gullas urged the public and the families of drug users to support them in their efforts to change.

Some barangay officials were among those who presented themselves to the police and confessed that they are drug users.

In Carcar City, two councilors from Barangays Poblacion 2 and Can-asujan admitted that they are drug users and presented themselves to the local police as their way of supporting the government’s Oplan Tokhang (Toktok Hangyo) campaign.
