Fire victims in Zamboanga City get cash aid

FAMILIES affected in the June 21 fire incident in the village of Sta. Catalina received financial cash assistance from the Zamboanga City Government, prioritizing the 248 families occupying the covered court at the Don Gregorio Evangelista Memorial School (Don Gems).

Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar on Friday personally led the distribution together with officials from the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) and the City Treasurer’s Office at the compound of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).

Salazar said the cash assistance was intended to help alleviate the plight of the affected families, who were earlier given food and relief assistance not only by the local government but also by other government agencies and private groups and individuals.

For house owners, the cash assistance was P5,000 per family while house sharers and renters got P3,000 each.

City Government released P2 million to over 600 families.

The affected families were expected to vacate the center and transfer to other designated temporary relocation sites based on the timetable set by the City Government.

The temporary sites were located at Masepla in the village of Mampang and in the the village of Tulungatung.

The Evangelista family in the village of Sta. Catalina also offered its property as relocation site. The lot can accommodate some 30 families.

Salazar has ordered the CSWDO and the CDRRMO to speed up the transfer of the remaining families to avoid the outbreak of diseases and other social problems at the evacuation center. (Bong Garcia)
