NAIA forced to close runway

THE Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Monday afternoon, July 18, was forced to implement an emergency closure on one of its runways, airport authorities said in an advisory.

In a statement, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said that the closure is to avoid damage to aircraft due to a soft spot in main Runway 06/24.

MIAA said that the closure was decided upon risk assessment made by airport authorities.

Because of the runway closure, there will be expected flight diversions until on or about 10:00 p.m., Monday, since flights using aircraft A320 and below may use Runway 13/31 for flight operations.

At present, MIAA now determining number of flights to be affected.

MIAA General Manager Eddie Villanueva Monreal is currently on site with MIAA Operations and Engineering Teams to see extent of damage.

The authority will forego its regular runway cleaning usually done daily from 1:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m. to cope with expected influx of diverted flights.
