Bukidnon chessers rule Carmen Fiesta chess tilt

CAGAYAN de Oro players will now remember their chess counterparts from Malaybalay City, Bukidnon as the mercenaries.

After the conquest of the mighty Jeriel Manlimbana in individual event last year, it was now the turn of Malaybalay’s troika of Noli Cabinlas, Roni Chavez and Olivarez to make noise in team competition.

Bukidnon swept through the seven-round chess skirmishes undefeated to bring home the P15,000 top purse and championship trophy of the 2016 Barangay Carmen Fiesta Chess Tournament concluded here recently.

“Laras tanan nga round, walay gipasaylo,” arbiter Jokorn ‘Bob Arum’ Maestrado told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

“Bantayanan na gayud ang taga-Bukidnon sa sunod nga mga torneyo,” the chess-playing CPA Ismar Estrella was overheard as saying.

CDO-DXB Kings’ threesome of Daniel Obezo and the Cayaba brothers, John Vincent and William grabbed the second prize of P10,000. While Trana Trinity, anchored by National Master Rustum Tolentino, Jeffrey Rivera and Mary Joy Tan, secured the third-place honor worth P6,000 also with trophy.

Stalag 45 (Oliver Damunsong, Rey Uy, William Reintegrado) and Straight Jab (Mario Arroyo, Abdul Halil Abdullah, Jong Arroyo) occupied fourth and fifth places to go along with P3,000 and P2,000 each.

Former FEU Tamaraws standout Antonio Chavez Jr. emerged as the best performer on board 1 to receive P1,500, while the high-scoring players on boards 2 and 3—Erwin Melendez and Reintegrado got P1,000 apiece.

Meanwhile, Euriel Grant Capilitan of Masterson Avenue Elem. School scored 6 points to rule the individual event for 13-under kiddies that earned for him P2,000 cash.

Corpus Christi’s Dave Ancheta and Rafael Calingin placed second and third, respectively, to settle for P1,000 and P500 each.

Rounding up the top-10 kiddies are Geniel Gonzaga, Justine Gonzaga, Kaye Maestrado, Lawrence Labradores, Sage Magsalay, Charles Klent Gabing and Lance Errol Sambaan.

Special awards went to Ruelle Canino (girls top 8-under), Rhea Canino (girls top 10under), Chargaets Andres (boys top 8-under) and Lance Rafael Magloyuan (boys top 10-under).
