NAIA runway reopens after repair

MANILA -- After being closed earlier for repair, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) runway which acquired a crack in its asphalt on Monday reopened at 10:45 p.m.

The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said the NAIA runway 06-24 reopened at 10:45 p.m., earlier than its expected 11:00 p.m. opening.

Diverted flights, meanwhile, are expected to arrive shortly.

Airport crew earlier said the small asphalt cracks in the morning got considerably bigger due to continued landing and take off. It was five inches deep, one meter wide and nine meters long.

MIAA immediately ordered the temporary closure of the runway to avoid safety issues and untoward incidents to aircrafts and passengers.

Because of the runway closure, several airlines have cancelled and diverted flights to Clark International Airport. (PNA)
