Lumawag: Things I like about YouTube

I LOVE YouTube and I think you have noticed that most of my weekly features are videos from the video-sharing website YouTube.

Since it was founded in 2005, YouTube has revolutionized how entertainment or information is delivered or shared. Allow me to share some of the things I love about the website.

Tutorials

There are a lot of things that we want to learn or do but are not taught in school or we simply do not have the means or access to learn these things.

Fortunately, YouTube has an abundance of tutorial videos and channels – some are focused on a certain topics.

For example, the Make Sushi channel (youtube.com/MakeSushi1) features videos on how to make different types of sushi but also include basics on cooking while Household Hacker (youtube.com/HouseholdHacker) features a huge range of life hacks.

There are also tutorials on accents, how to put on a makeup, and DIY videos, among many other topics.

Educational videos

YouTube has thousands of hours of educational videos that will help you understand various topics and subjects, whether it is being taught in school or not. Most of these videos are animated, giving you a better perspective on the subject matter.

Aside from topics such as math, science, language, grammar, and history, there are also videos that seeks to educate viewers on what is happening in the world around us.

For example, during the Ebola outbreak, Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell (youtube.com/user/Kurzgesagt released a video entitled, “The Ebola Virus Explained – How your body fights for survival”. The same channel also released a three part series on nuclear energy discussing how it works and its pros and cons.

The TED-Ed channel (youtube.com/user/TEDEducation) also features a huge video library of a wide variety of topics. Vox (youtube.com/user/voxdotcom), on the other hand, features videos explaining current events like the Brexit or the military coup in Turkey.

Entertainment

One of the primary reasons why we visit YouTube is to entertain ourselves.

Music videos, short films, comedic skits, you name it. YouTubers upload hundreds of hours of original content that will entertain you for hours.

TV networks and film companies have also taken advantage of YouTube to promote or upload clips of their shows.

Wong Fu Producations, NigaHiga, Peter Hollens, Saturday Night Live, Jomie Hospital, The Fine Brothers, CineFix, and College Humor are just some of the many channels you can visit to keep yourself entertained.
