Diocese of Dumaguete mourns death of priest

DUMAGUETE CITY –- The Diocese of Dumaguete is mourning the death of one of its priests, Rev. Fr. Victor Ablir Fontejon, who died at age of 66 on early Wednesday due to lingering illness.

He was born on December 28, 1949 to Santiago and Edilberta Fontejon, and hails from Sibulan, Negros Oriental.

Fr. Fontejon completed his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at San Carlos Seminary College, Cebu, then his Bachelor of Arts in Sacred Theology at Seminario Mayor de San Carlos, Mabolo, Cebu City.

He was ordained as a priest on April 7, 1976 by Most Rev. Epifanio Surban, D.D. at the St. Catherine of Alexandria Cathedral, Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.

He served in the Diocese of Dumaguete in various capacities, to include, as follows: April 23, 1976 Assistance Parish Priest, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental,June 2, 1989 School Director, Assisi High School, Siquijor, August 2, 1989 Member, Presbyteral Council, August 19, 2002, Episcopal Vicar, Island District of Siquijor, April 29, 2005 School Director, Lazi, Siquijor, April 11, 2006 Parish Priest, St. Augustine of Hippo Parish, San Juan, Siquijor.

He also served as Parish Priest on different towns as follows: June 15, 1993 in Our Lady of Divine Providence Parish, Maria, Siquijor, June 18, 1997 at St. Vincent Ferrer Parish, Larena, Siquijor, March 26, 2002, St. Isidore the Farmer Parish, Lazi, Siquijor, June 9, 1978, Parish Priest, Santo Niño Parish, Jimalalud, Negros Oriental, June 16, 1984 Parish Priest, Sto. Niño Parish, Mabinay, Negros Oriental, December 14, 1989 Parish Priest, St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Siquijor and on April 15, 2014 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, Enrique Villanueva, Siquijor.

Fr. Fontejon’s body now lies in state at the Marian Priests’ Center, Cathedral Compound in Dumaguete City until July 23, where a mass will be celebrated at the Cathedral.

His remains shall be brought to their family residence in Sibulan from July 23 to July 27.

His remains shall be brought to St. Anthony of Padua Parish Church, Sibulan for an overnight vigil until July 28, where a funeral mass will be celebrated at one in the afternoon followed by his burial. (PNA)
