Pages: Run for Mary and the St. Ignatius Run

A GOOD laugh and a long run are the two best cures for anything.

I love that quote. Isn’t that true?

With the “long run,” there are two upcoming events that I highly recommend you join. The Cobra Ironman 70.3 race — scheduled on Aug. 7 — is sandwiched between these two.

The St. Ignatius Run kicks off two mornings from now.

Dexter Go, the long-time long-distance runner (he’s finished too-many-to-count 21-km. runs), is spearheading the event this Sunday. Together with his batchmates from Batch 1991 of the Sacred Heart School, they are continuing a tradition in Cebu that is now on its sixth year.

With the St. Ignatius Run, the start and finish is at the SM Seaside City. Perfect because of the ample parking and the ready space for the awarding ceremonies.

No matter what your fitness-condition, the five categories offered will suit everyone. There’s the 1K, 3K, 6K, 12K and the half-marathon (21K). As I said, you have a buffet-like choice of distances.

Here’s the good news: Registration is still open. In most races, by this time, you’re no longer eligible to participate because the enlistment has closed.

“There is no deadline for registration,” said Dexter. “There will be an onsite registration on race day.”

Very good.

“The entrance to the SRP in Plaza Independencia may be closed to traffic at 4 a.m.,” Dexter said. “So those who can’t make it to this cut off may have to take the Mambaling entrance to SM Seaside City.”

To add spice to the run, Zumba will be danced prior to the gunstarts of each category. Zumba will also be offered after the run, added Dexter. Plus, he wants to highlight this prize: All finishers will receive medals.

RUN FOR MARY. If the St. Ignatius Run is happening two weeks before the Ironman 70.3 race, another must-join event will transpire one week after IM70.3.

And if the St. Ignatius Run is one that’s related to the Jesuits, this one is organized by the Redemptorist Church.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the turning over of the miraculous icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help by Pope Pius IX to the Redemptorist missionaries in 1866, the Redemptorist Church in Cebu has decided to spearhead a run.

Fr. Chris Mostajo mentioned three objectives with the August 13 (Saturday) event.

“This is done to bring people together,” Fr. Cris Mostajo said. “Second is devotion to the Virgin Mary and third is to find ways to make her known as mandated by Pope Pius IX.”

Pete Clavano, whom I’ve known for a long time (together with Mrs. Lennie Clavano), is one of the prime movers among the lay ministers in the Redemptorist Church in Cebu. He’s also the lead person who’s organizing the run.

“We decided to do a running event because she (Our Mother of Perpetual), just like any other mother, wants her children to take care of our health,” said Mr. Clavano.

Four distances are being offered: 10K, 5K, 3K and 1K.

The race director? The famous Joel Juarez of Coco Running. Joel is not helping run this event purely on a professional basis — he’s directly part of the Redemptorist Church as a lay minister. You might have been one of the churchgoers who have received communion from Joel.

The fees are: P400 for the 10K and 5K, P350 for the 3K and P300 for the 1K — all inclusive of a finisher’s certificate, race bib, race shirt and refreshments.

As a regular churchgoer at the Redemptorist Church, I’ll surely join the Aug. 13 race.

How to register? The entry forms are available at the church. Even better, hear mass before signing up.
