FORMER Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga gets a new opponent for his much-anticipated pro debut.Barriga takes on 18-year-old Melvin Manangquil instead of journeyman Powell Balaba in the undercard of Omega Pro Sports International’s Who’s Next? Pro Boxing Series on July 30 at the Robinson’s Galleria.“Balaba did not make the 90-day suspension after losing his last fight. He is five days short of it,” OPSI vice-president Chad Cañares told Sun.Star Cebu.Balaba got knocked out by Micahel Landero in his last fight and must serve a suspension for his protection.Manangquil is a newcomer that has four fights under his belt with a 1-1-2 record with a knockout. He made his pro debut in November and lost by unanimous decision against James Golez. He settled to a darw with John Michael Zulueta before logging his first pro win, a first round knockout of Rocky Campana just last April. He is coming off a split draw Zulueta in their rematch last month. The 23-year-old Barriga was supposed to make his pro debut last month against Mark Anthony Florida in Taguig but the fight was cancelled.Barriga is a Southeast Asian gold medalist. He fought in the 2012 London Olympics but was eliminated in the round-of-16 after losing by a single point, 16-17, to Kazakh Birzhan Zhakypov.Barriga also fought in the 2011 World Championships but was beaten by Chinese boxing icon Zou Shiming.Barriga turned pro after fellow Filipino light flyweight Rogen Ladon qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.Undefeated prospect Jack Tepora(17-0, 12 KOs) defends his World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia-Pacific Youth super bantamweight against Bryan Capangpangan (10-2-1, 7 KOs) in the main event.
