Smitten by Siquijor

SIQUIJOR is often referred to as a mystical island, and rightfully so. From the Siquijor port, the view of the verdant mountains, white sand beach, and blue green sea have already rendered me bewitched by its natural charm. When we toured the coastline of the whole island, I found allure in its rustic beauty.

There’s plenty to explore in Siquijor. From its century-old tree to its heritage churches, it has so much to offer to visitors and residents, alike. I felt like I had struck a goldmine as we rode through empty highways and getting to deserted shores, making me feel like I had the island all to myself. During our stay, the quiet and stress-free day would usually end with a breathtaking view of the sun that was setting on a widened beach as the water moves away from the coast.

Natural attractions

The town of San Juan has rows of beach resorts with its long stretch of fine white sand. But it was the secluded beach at Paliton where I found my little piece of paradise. I floated on the sea, basking on the sun and the solitude, as there were only a few people to share the clear, green waters I was enjoying.

If you are the adventurous type, the Salagdoong Beach in Maria, where you can cliff-dive, or the Cambugahay Falls in Lazi, where you can swing from a rope to the natural pool, would be your best bet. Just be prepared to find most of the vacationers camped in these two attractions.

There are also destination options for some relaxing moments in a controlled environment. The Enchanted Balete Tree in Campalanas, Lazi offers travelers a fun and rejuvenating refuge where they can have some fish spa at the small stream found at the base of the tree. The Capilay Spring Park, located at the heart of San Juan town, is where most locals spend their afternoon swimming.

Heritage structures

Upon arriving at the Siquijor port, the first thing that welcomed us was the 18th-century church of St. Francis of Assisi, the poster image of this island destination. A bell tower, which also doubled as a watchtower, stood at a distance. This is just one of the five famous heritage structures in Siquijor.

Visitors were also drawn to the San Isidro Labrador Church, as well as to the San Isidro Labrador Convent just across the church. The architecture and intricate interiors of the church were fascinating. More artifacts could be found in the little museum inside the convent.

Other historical churches we visited were the San Agustin Church just above the Capilay Spring Park and the Our Lady of Divine Providence Church in Maria, which features beautiful murals of the Way of the Cross on its walls.

The landscape, the tranquility, and the history – such is the charisma of Siquijor. If you are bound for this island, be prepared to be greeted by a picturesque landscape that will get you smitten by this magical paradise.
