Bontoc green police lauded in Env't Summit

THE SUSTAINABLE solid waste management is proving more effective in Mountain Province, thanks to a community-based organization like the Bontoc Green Police.

The women's organization, which ensures proper segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste materials, has been recently honored in the 1st Cordillera Environmental Summit on Integrated Waste Management held recently in Baguio City.

The Green Police were lauded for their exemplary initiative in the efficient implementation of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

Bontoc executive assistant Arthur Odsey said the Green Police are volunteers which helps the LGU in promoting the awareness needed to minimize garbage problems in smaller communities of the capital town of Mt. Province.

"We have our good volunteers we call them the Green Police, a group mostly composed of women. They freely do community services particularly inspecting the garbage collected in the barangays," Odsey told Sun.Star Baguio.

Odsey added the primary goal of the Green Police is to ensure residual wastes are properly taken cared of before being brought to the collection area of the barangays.

"They always check to make sure the segregation is observed by the people. Kung nakita nila na hindi nakahiwalay ang mga basura na itatapon mo they require you to do it or else you will be requested to bring it home again with you," Odsey explained.

Since the organization was put up, the LGU became aware of the effect it can have in controlling their solid waste problem.

According Odsey, Bontoc has cut down its expenses in hauling residual garbage out of their town.

Recyclables such as plastic bottles are being reprocessed for other uses such as additives for creating bricks used in various community projects, while locals are encouraged to take care of their own biodegradable wastes or be dumped in barangay-based composting areas.

Other groups and individuals lauded in the summit organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Cordillera include the Province of Benguet, Ba-ayan Elementary School (Annex), Maryknoll Ecological Santuary, Mountain Maid Training & Development Foundation, Municipality of La Trinidad, Ambiong Barangay, Baguio City National High School, HEDCOR Inc. (Benguet), T.I. Philippines Inc., Elma Donaal, Jane Liwan, and Julie Cabato.
