Bishop: Lives should be defended

INCOMING Bacolod Bishop Patricio Buzon commended President Rodrigo Duterte for his “very serious and sincere” campaign against corruption, illegal drugs, and criminality.

However, Buzon said the government should do it in a proper way, and should always uphold the law and human rights.

“We cannot decide on the lives of others,” he added, referring to the killings that ensued amid the anti-drug campaign of the Duterte administration.

Buzon said the Catholic church reiterates that government efforts against criminality has to be done morally.

“People’s lives should be defended even if they have done something wrong,” he added.

Meanwhile, Buzon, who will be installed as the next Bacolod bishop on Augus 9, said he has no specific plans for the diocese yet as he intends to observe first the situation.

“We will determine the problems and give solutions to these once we know the situation,” he said, adding that what is important is that he accepted his role in the Diocese of Bacolod.

Buzon is currently bishop of the Diocese of Kabankalan, which he has been serving for 13 years before his transfer to Bacolod next week.
