USING Biblical verses and passages, People's champ Senator Manny Pacquiao in his first privilege speech asked his colleagues to support and pass the measure that would reimpose the death penalty.
Pacquiao, who is a born again Christian, cited several passages in the Bible insisting that God himself allowed death to happen to those who refused to obey His will.
"It is lawful and moral especially in the eyes of God. When the government punishes, it is not an individual act. That's approved by God. That's what the Bible says," Pacquiao said.
Senator Vicente Tito Sotto III, in his interpellation, asked the boxing champ what made him decide to push for the controversial death penalty.
"We also have obligation to our citizens to provide them the right to live their lives peacefully and orderly," Pacquiao answered.
Pacquiao in a joking manner said he prefers executions done by either hanging or firing squad.
"It can be done by kicking the chair and it's done," Pacquiao said.
For which Sotto said, "'Pag death by hanging walang gastos, mas madali nga naman at mas matipid."
Pacquiao said he supports President Rodrigo Duterte's campaign against illegal drugs insisting that those who will be guilty of the crime should be meted the death penalty.
Senator Leila de Lima, a former Justice Secretary, reminded Pacquiao that death penalty in the international community specifically in Europe is not encouraged anymore.
She also reminded Pacquiao that the Philippines is one of the signatory pushing for the abolition of death penalty.
Aside from illegal drugs, Pacquiao has filed several bills on the death penalty, which include rape and murder. (Sunnex)
