Tabal finishes 124th in Olympic women’s marathon

CEBUANA marathoner Mary Joy Tabal finished 124th in the women’s marathon event of the 2016 Rio Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Tabal completed the 42-kilometer race with an official time of 3 hours and 2 minutes and 27 seconds. She was 38:23 off the pace from the gold medalist Jemima Jelagat Sumgong of Kenya who clocked 2:24:04.

Bahrain’s Eunice Jepkirui Kirwa salvaged silver medal in 2:24:13 and Ethiopia’s Mare Dibaba settled for bronze medal after clocking 2:24:30.

Tirfi Tsegaye (2:24:47) of Ethiopia and Volha Mazuronak (2:24:48) of Belarus completed the women’s marathon Top 5.

The 27-year-old Tabal of Barangay Guba, Cebu City is the first Olympian from Cebu after 20 years.

She’s also the first Filipina to make it to Summer Games women’s marathon.
