THE questions on whether Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. will join the party of President Rodrigo Duterte will be answered on Monday.
August 15 is the deadline set by the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) for Marañon and his allies to submit their application forms.
Yves Akol, secretary-general of PDP-Laban in Negros Island Region, said on Sunday he will pick up the forms at around 9 a.m. at the Provincial Capitol.
He said that he will then meet with the local party members and get their feedback.
Akol added that the feedback or opposition of local party members will be forwarded to the National Membership Committee, along with the forms.
Last week, allies of Marañon led by Second District Board Member Salvador Escalante Jr., secretary general of United Negros Alliance (Unega) and Hinobaan Mayor Ernesto Estrao, along with his vice mayor and eight councilors, submitted their forms to Unega secretary Angel Verdeflor, who was told that the other Unega allies will submit their forms today.
Verdeflor said that not all 14 mayors allied with the governor will join PDP-Laban as some opted to stay with the National Unity Party.
Escalante had earlier said that majority of them will join PDP-Laban since they are following the lead of Marañon, who has already decided to join.
Meanwhile, the schedule of the induction of new PDP-Laban members in Negros Occidental has been reset to September 10.
Akol said that this is due to a conflict in the schedule of the national leadership.
Duterte, the party chairman; Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III, party president; and House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez, party secretary-general, are expected to arrive during the oath-taking rites previously set on August 30.
