Benguet okays creation of Sablan Water Committee

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet -- A proposed ordinance establishing a water conservation committee and implementation of such programs in the municipality of Sablan was recently given favorable review by members of the Provincial Board.

Ordinance 16-02 creates a water conservation committee that will protect and promote platforms for local water management.

Members of the committee on environment and natural resources in the Provincial Board said the proposed law be forwarded to the office of the provincial governor for further actions.

Under the proposed law, the water conservation committee will actively encourage the civil society, the academe, and other business sector in other environment-related activities specifically in organizing, educating, motivating, and disseminating information to the people addressing water-related problems.

Chaired by the local chief executive with members from the Sangguniang Bayan, the proposed working committee will lead the information, education, and communications (IEC) within the locality.

This includes barangay-based information drive on the importance of water, legislation on the regulation for conservation in residential, commercial, industrial and institutional establishments in compliance to the existing water conservation laws.

Among the projects being eyed under the water conservation committee include rainwater harvesting facilities in each barangay and the installation of water saving devices like water aerators in all household levels.

Tree-planting and other reforestation activities will also be conducted and an integrated lecture on water conservation and demand will also be done in schools. The committee will also formulate a five-year water efficiency and public information plan linked with the local water utility and other agencies concerned.
