Arroyo elected deputy speaker

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Former President and now Pampanga Second District Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is among five law makers who have been elected House deputy speakers in the 17th Congress.

According to majority floor leader Rudy Fariñas, Arroyo will join Taguig Representative and former senator Pia Cayetano, Cebu Representative Gwendolyn Garcia, Davao Representative Mylene Garcia-Albano, and Aambis Owa Representative Sharon Garin.

Arroyo was earlier nominated by the congressmen of the Central Luzon bloc led by Bulacan Fourth District Representative Linabelle Villarica.

"We had our lunch together and then our president, Linabelle Villarica, said that well, 'to our fellow members, we would like to nominate our former president to be our representative as Deputy Speaker' so I clapped and said 'okay, okay, approve, approve' that's all," Arroyo said.

Arroyo expressed support to President Rodrigo Duterte's plan regarding Charter change.

"I filed a resolution for Con-Ass," she said.

Her election as deputy speaker for Central Luzon, Arroyo added, is part of the plan to divide Congress into 12 federal states in preparation for a federal form of government.

Under House rules, a deputy speaker is an ex-officio member of all House committees.
