Garcia takes oath as one of House deputy speakers

CEBU Rep. Gwen Garcia (Cebu, third district) took oath during the House plenary session last Monday as one of the House deputy speakers.

She described the experience as a “proud moment for the Cebuanos.”

“Today, Aug.15, 2016, by God’s grace, I took my oath as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives,” read a post on her social network account. Her post further stated that six years ago, Aug. 1, 2010, her father Atty. Pablo Garcia also took his oath as deputy speaker.

During last Monday’s plenary session, Majority Floor Leader Rudy Fariñas also announced other deputy speakers in the 17th Congress, namely Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Taguig Rep Pia Cayetano, Davao City Rep. Mylene Garcia-Albaño and Party-List Aambis Owa Rep. Sharon Garin.

Two other Cebuano solons who got elected in the 17th Congress are 4th District Rep Benhur Salimbangon as member of the House committee on appointments; and Cebu 1st District Rep. Gerald Gullas as deputy majority leader.

Positions

Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III congratulates Cebu lawmakers who got elected to key positions in the House.

Of the three Cebuano district representatives who got elected in key positions in the 17th Congress, Rep Garcia and Salimbangon ran against LP candidates and won. Only Gullas’ Alayon Party is the governor’s ally.

Majority of the seven Cebu Congressmen either joined or coalesced with President Rodrigo Duterte’s political Party, PDP Laban.

“Lahi sad gyud ang dynamics diha sa Congress, that is expected, that’s really very Filipino,” the governor said.

He said it is the tendency that political leaders join the President’s ruling party.

And seeing PDP Laban growth, Davide does not mind.

“Lokal ra man ang ato. That’s up to the congressmen, that’s their concern, that’s their domain,” Davide said.

But as far as he is concerned, which he had already said previously, he will remain a member of the Liberal Party.
