Barrita: No business like the drug business

A TEAM of hundreds of law enforcers swooped down on the Cebu City Jail and the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) at dawn Saturday and seized some P4.6 million cash, some P1 million worth of shabu and other contraband.

The huge amount of cash, believed to be proceeds from illegal drugs, indicates a thriving illegal drugs business inside two of Cebu’s biggest jails.

Now it can be said, there’s no business like the illegal drugs business.

Cebu City Jail Warden Johnson Calub and 28 senior jail guards were relieved of their duties Tuesday as the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) investigates the presence of illegal drugs, cash and other contraband inside the jail.

Could they claim innocence with the magnitude of the illegal drug trade that happened under their noses?

It’s too bad they’re not trained, unlike K9 dogs, to sniff illegal drugs.

Chief Supt. Noli Taliño, Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 director, said they received information that some drug users pose as visitors and used illegal drugs inside the jails.

Taliño said many drug users are afraid to use drugs outside because of Operation Tokhang and would prefer the safety of using drugs inside the jails.

It was good the city jail dropped the name Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center for it has become a shabu “tiangge” (market) and a drug den.

But how did the illegal drugs go inside the city and provincial jails?

Senior Supt. Hilbert Flor, BJMP 7 assistant director for administration, said female visitors possibly concealed sachets of shabu in their private parts and brought them inside the jails.

Why not ask the jail guards? Perhaps they know more than this beautiful theory which they are still investigating.
