Foreigner sued for abusing girlfriend

A FOREIGN national is set to face charges before the court for violation against women and children or Republic Act (RA) 9262 for allegedly causing physical harm to his girlfriend.

James Leonard Tu, a New Zealander living in Australia, is charged for violation of RA 9262 after hitting and allegedly doing physical harm on Amielinda Vinzon Romino.

Based on the complaint, Romino said she and Tu met through a social media dating site in July 15, 2016.

Tu went to Philippines last August 1 and met with Romino at Big Apple Hotel located along Damosa Road, where they had sex.

On August 4, a heated argument ensued between the two as Romino learned that Tu will be meeting another Filipina.

The following day, respondent allegedly texted Romino that he wanted to treat her on her birthday and the two met then watched a movie together.

On the evening of August 9, Tu allegedly got mad due to a mistaken order delivered by the hotel staff and also when Romino refused to have dinner with him.

He left in a huff and went to his hotel room.

Romino followed Tu and confronted him but he got angrier.

Tu allegedly stood up and slapped Romino.

Attached to the complaint was the medical certificate of the victim stating that the she suffered bruises with a probable healing time of seven days.

Prosecutor Imee Mabale, in a resolution dated August 12, said that based on the following evidences she found probable cause to indict the respondent in violation of the RA 9262 for causing harm to a woman whom he had sexual relationship.

The prosecutor also cannot indict the respondent with another count of the said violation for the utterances against the respondent as the allegations in the complaint do not constitute any violation of any of the provisions of the RA 9262.
