Pinoy athletes Cray, Torres-Sunang fail to advance in Rio

PHILIPPINE'S Eric Cray and Marestella Torres-Sunang failed to advance to the finals in the men's 400-meter hurdles and women's long jump, respectively, ending their campaign at the Rio Olympics on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila).

Cray, the fastest man in Southeast Asia, finished the 400-meter hurdles semifinals heat with a time of 49.37 seconds.

The Filipino-American track athlete placed seventh among the eight runners during the heat. First was Kerron Clement of the United States (48.26 seconds), followed by Boniface Mucheru of Kenya (48.85 seconds) and Sergio Fernandez of Spain (48.87 seconds).

In the women's long jump, Torres-Sunang registered 6.22-meters in her first attempt, 6.10-meters in the second and 6.15-meters in her third jump.

Torres-Sunang finished 14th place in Group B and 28th place among 38 competitors in the said event.

Torres-Sunang, a four-time gold medalist in Southeast Asian Games, is the 11th Filipino athlete who failed to bag a medal in Rio. (Sunnex)
