Drug suspect tried shooting at cops, killed

A SUSPECTED drug pusher was killed in what police said was a shootout in Sitio Sto. Niño, Barangay Labangon yesterday afternoon.

Esteven Velasco was shot dead when he resisted arrest inside a drug den at 5:30 p.m.

Nagkarambola na man sa sulod pagkakita sa mga police. Pagsulod sa usa nato nition na man si Velasco (The people inside the drug den already panicked. When one of our men went inside, Velasco drew his gun),” PO1 Keith Gabica of the Police Station 10 said.

The police first saw Velasco with a tucked gun on his waist and when they called his attention, he went inside the drug den where he attempted to fire his gun, but it failed to fire.

Gabica said Velasco was rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center, but he did not make it alive.

A joint operation was conducted by the City Intelligence Branch (CIB), Investigation and Detective Management Branch (IDMB) and Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat), and the Mobile Patrol Group (MPG) during a One Time Bigtime under a Project Double Barrel.

Police conducted an Oplan Tokhang, a saturation drive and serving of warrant.

The police were serving a warrant of arrest to a certain “Junjun Baldesamo” another drug pusher but he managed to escape.

A .357 revolver with 4 live ammunition, 4 rectangular sachets of shabu and various drug paraphernalias were recovered from the scene.

Labangon

Three drug users were also arrested in the boundary road of A. Lopez in Barangay Calamba and Barangay Labangon.

They were identified as Raymund Bingil, 49, Vicente Maning, 48 and Neil Cobrado, 29.

A suspected junkie and drug runner was shot by three identified assailants while he was sleeping inside his house in Barangay Buanoy, Balamban yesterday dawn.

Emy Labustro Caña, 28, succumbed to two gunshot wounds in the chest.

Senior Insp. Ramil Morpos, the town police chief, said the victim was also a known thief in his neighborhood.

A witness told the police that the assailants went inside the house and one of them shot Caña several times.

The culprits managed to open the door by hitting it repeatedly with a hard object.

Investigation showed the victim surrendered to the police last month during the Oplan Tokhang, a program in which the police officers visit the houses of persons suspected to be engaged in illegal drug trade and persuade them to stop.

Morpos, in a phone interview, said Caña promised to mend his ways and start a new life.

The police are looking into the possibility that the death was related to illegal drugs or his being a thief.

The witness, who looked out of the window of his house when he heard noise, was not able to see the faces of the culprits because they wore bonnets.

Carmen

Last Monday morning, the police arrested Wendell Batoto Sanico, 31, in a buy-bust in Barangay Dawis Norte, Carmen.

Seized from his possession were five sachets of shabu worth more than P2,000.

A complaint of violating Republic Act 9165, or Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, was filed against the suspect yesterday.

Mandaue

A man was shot dead in a buy-bust operation in Mandaue City last Tuesday.

At 5:38pm, the suspect, identified as Ariel “Dodong” Borbon, 31, married, resident of Sitio. Latasan, Barangay Labogon, Mandaue City.

PO1 Jude Mondonedo of Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) served as a poseur buyer during the operation.

Borbon reportedly pulled his firearm and opened fire at Mondonedo when he noticed police officers in his area during the operation.

Unfortunately, one of the police team immediately shot the suspect that causes his death.

The suspect was included in the Barangay Anti Drug Council (BADAC) watch list.

Surrender

In an interview with Bernouli Dioquino Abalos, police superintendent of MCPO, said the suspect surrendered to the Mandaue Police Station 3 last Aug. 4.

He said the police officers of station 3 found that the suspect was still doing his illegal job after he surrendered.

Borbon is now the 10th dead in Mandaue City involving drugs.

Police recovered a caliber 9.mm pistol with three rounds of ammos, one piece of small, heat-sealed transparent sachet containing white-crystalline substance believed to be shabu, a medium sachet believed to be shabu and two one P100 bills that served as buy-bust money.
