DOT to boost cut flower industry

THE Department of Tourism - Cordillera Administrative Region is looking to develop the cut flower industry in La Trinidad, Benguet.

Following the department’s call to make Benguet’s capital town as an agro-tourism destination, DOT-CAR is urging the flower growers to make necessary engagements which can further extend the market of their products.

“We observed the cut flower industry in La Trinidad is more focused on just growing, harvesting, and selling their products. As much as we want to really promote the municipality as an agro-tourism destination, the department has arranged community programs which will educate the locals on this,” DOT regional director Venus Tan said.

Recently, locals from La Trinidad and neighboring towns have participated in a flower marketing workshop at the Benguet Capitol.

The seminar gave tutorials and educational drives on how to increase the production of their plants and incorporated the use of flowers for perfume manufacturing and the utilization of dried flowers as decorative ornaments.

“This has been coined since we observed during the Baguio Flower Festival, where most of the flowers are coming from La Trinidad, are being wasted. Instead of throwing them there are still a lot of ways they can be used,” Tan said.

The regional director added the adoption of the proposal can also add value to the municipality’s attraction.

“Of course the benefit does not only extend the use of the flowers, it can also be that locals can incorporate the activity if they will adopt it to the activities or places where visitors visit here,” she added.

Meanwhile, town officials have expressed their support to the expansion of flower production for the municipality. Councilor Renato Tereng who chairs the committee on agriculture said DOT and the LGU should continue to work hand-in-hand to come up with programs such to help local entrepreneurs.

“This is a good proposal, we will see to it the LGU is in full support for all this,” Tereng said.
