Calayan Medical Group Inc. picks Cebu for expansion

A NAME in the beauty and medical industry has staged its newly incorporated company, the Calayan Medical Group Inc., in Cebu.

Lalen Calayan, the company’s operations manager and business development head, said the company is technically a “separate” entity from the Calayan business firms operating in Luzon, a move which he referred to as a strategy to further grow the family business.

“Legally, this is the first (Calayan Medical Group Inc.) nationwide but we have ongoing expansions,” Lalen told Sun.Star Cebu in an interview at Oakridge Business Park, where the Calayan Medical Group is stationed. It soft-opened on May 8.

Company expansions in other areas, however, were not disclosed. Its Cebu facility is the first to open among many others that will open within the year.

Historically, the Calayans are prominent names in the cosmetic surgery industry in the Philippines, but not known to many. The family is also operating hospitals in the country.

The first to open was in Lucena City in Quezon in the 1960s, which formally started the Calayan family business. However, it was in the 1990s, according to Lalen, when the name was more prominently attributed to cosmetics than for the medical industry.

With the Calayan Medical Group Inc., Lalen said the family aims to provide the market with more holistic interventions, both in the medical and cosmetic fields.

In Cebu, the Calayan Medical Group operates four departments, namely: the stem cell therapies or regenerative medicine, the plastic and reconstructive surgery, dermatology, and aesthetic and wellness. It has eight doctors and about ten staff members.

Lalen believes they have a market in Cebu, it being the “best place” in the country for medical tourism.

The official also acknowledged the growing number of players in this industry. “People are starting to be aware that vanity is a necessity. It’s not luho (indulgence) lang. It’s part of personal growth,” he added.

In a month, Lalen said its Cebu facility will start to operate full-blast, making available all possible services like body treatments, laser and light treatments, injectables, stem cell therapies and cosmetic surgeries.
