‘Just go out and play’

THE Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) won the secondary division title of the Milo Little Olympics Visayas Elimination last year in Iloilo City for the first time in 19 years. With the event going back to Cebu, defending the title on Sept. 8 to 11 will be no easy task for them.

“The complexion of the competition changes if it’s held in Cebu because it’s mostly a battle of Cebu-based schools. The Cebu-based schools can put maximum entry in all the sporting events,” said SHS-AdC athletic director Rico Navarro.

Navarro said that for SHS-AdC, they have only around 120 athletes for both the elementary and secondary divisions. They will be competing in the elementary and secondary athletics, basketball, football, lawn tennis, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and volleyball.

“All the teams (of SHS-AdC) are preparing now. The goal is to finish the possible positioning on their respective events,” he said. “We don’t target the overall title we just go out there and play.”

Navarro recalled that last year they were not expecting to win the secondary division overall title but it just happened through the hard work of the students and coaches.

“I tell the teams to play hard and enjoy the game and if it lead us to the championship then be it,” said Navarro.

Navarro said that in the history of the competition, if it’s held in Cebu, it’s usually the University of Cebu and the University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department (USC-Bed) who get the overall crowns.

The USC-Bed won the elementary division title last year and they’re also looking to defend it this year in Cebu.

The Milo Little Olympics now has 15 regular sporting events after the addition of karatedo and arnis. The rest are athletics, badminton, basketball, football, gymnastics, lawn tennis, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, chess, scrabble, sepak takraw and volleyball. The games will be played in various sporting centers in Cebu.
