DOT-CAR empowers wives on tourism

THE Department of Tourism in the Cordillera recently gathered spouses of political leaders in a bid to empower the move for change.

DOT Regional Director Marie Venus Tan said spouses of politicians have to be engaged and empowered to be able to push for more sustainable tourism projects.

"They can make a difference in people’s lives," added Tan during the roundtable forum themed "Espousing the role of leaders' spouses in tourism and its value chain."

Baguio spouses within Baguio City, La Trinidad, Itogon, Sablan, Tuba and Tublay (BLISST) together with their counterparts from Sagada, Mt. Province and Banaue, Ifugao were called recently to share ideas and network for sustainable projects to discuss the importance of tourism issues, which affect the environment, culture, heritage and the role of women in tourism, gender and development.

Former tourism czar Mina Gabor, former Miss Universe Margie Moran and former ambassador Delia Albert were among the speakers who gave their insights and projects on the tourism industry.

Maribel Ongpin of the Pine Cone Movement and Charisse Tugade of the Manila Collectables presented a sustainable tourism hinged on indigenous knowledge while Myrna Reinoso presented plans and programs of the TPLEX which can help the industry.

The forum aims to empower spouses to advocate for programs benefiting sustainable tourism to their husbands in power and at the same time foresee a transformation in becoming tourism champions who can spur tourism and economic change.
