30 schools in Davao benefit from Caltex program

A TOTAL of 30 public schools have been awarded with modern equipment and learning resources through the Caltex Fuel Your School (FYS) project, which accumulated P3 million used for its procurement during its culminating ceremony on Thursday, August 25.

Caltex FYS is a community campaign which was activated last June 1 to June 30.

The customers can participate in the program through fuel-to-donate campaign. They contributed P1 for every one liter fuel and Delo products purchased at participating Caltex stations to help fund eligible Stem (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) classroom projects of public school teachers.

In July, Caltex representatives visited different schools and awarded various materials.

Those materials included interactive board, scientific calculator, microscopes, LED TV and other lab materials. These materials were proposed by the principals and the teachers to fill the lacking tools under the category of Stem.

Chevron Philippines Incorporated (CPI) manager Raissa Bautista said the objective of the project is to provide learning materials to the thousands of public students augmented to their need.

“The project Caltext FYS essentially supports programs and projects of the different highest need senior high schools that are kto12 ready,” Bautista said.

The project was developed after Caltex noticed a substantial lacking of equipment or tools in the stem public schools in Davao City.

“We wanted to address as well the public school teachers who would typically shell out their personal money to be able to impart the kind of education, the best level they can,” Bautista said, hoping that with the stem materials, it could provide more accessible education that could level the private counterpart.

Caltex on one hand was optimistic that with the awareness campaign they did, these public schools will become visible to other possible benefactors.

As the project grows in the coming year, Caltex was hoping that they can leverage the participation or contribution of other potential partners and make it a sustainable project, Bautista said.

According to Agnes Jane Nudalo of Marilog National High School, one of the 200 high school teachers who benefited from the project said the materials helped her in her method of teaching specially in her presentation where students can now visulaize the lessons instead of solely relying on the books.

“It really helps a lot compared before. Though we already have small television and computer units, but it was still insufficient unlike now. With the new learning materials, a large number of students will be catered,” Nudalo said.

FYS was launched in partnership with Department of Education who identified the eligible public schools and the American Chamber Foundation Philippines with the support of American Chambers of the Philippines –Mindanao Chapter.

CPI Philippine Products General Manager Peter Morris said this was the second wave that Caltex conducted this project in the Philippines, first was in Metro Manila and then Davao.

“It’s an opportunity to involve our business partners and the local community to raise awareness and funds to support local high schools,” Morris said.

“This program, here in the three to four months in Davao was spectacular. I’ve never seen such enthusiasm from the teachers,” he added.
