PREMIER dance couples from nine countries will once again hit Cebu dance floors in efforts to win the Cebu World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) Open Dancesport Championship 2016 title on Sept. 10 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.
Dance athletes from Italy, Spain, Russia, Kazakhstan, Korea, Malaysia, Japan and Australia and the Philippines – have already confirmed participation along with the nearly 500 athletes from all over the country who will be competing in the 9th Dancesports sa Sugbu competition, which will serve as the matinee event to the much anticipated international competition.
Last year, Australian tandem Brodie Barden and Lana Skrigic de Fonseka won the Modern Standard competition, while Edgar Marcos Borjas and Alina Sabalo won the Open Latin category.
The Philippines’ Gerald Jamili and Cherry Clarice Parcon and Cebu's top dance athletes Wilbert Aunzo and Pearl Marie Cañeda placed fourth.
The estimated 14-hour dancesports festival will feather 19 categories that includes the Juvenile 3 (11 years old and below) Closed Syllabus; Juvenile 5 (11 years old and below) Closed Syllabus; Junior 3 (between 12 years old to 15 years old); Junior 5 (between 12 years old to 15 years old); Youth 3 (between 16 years old to 18 years old); Youth 5 (between 16 years old to 18 years old); Teacher-Student I-3 Dance (student must be 39 years old and below); Teacher- Student II-3 Dance (student must be 40 years old and above); Teacher- Student II-4 Dance (student must be 40 years old and above); Teacher- Student II-5 Dance (student must be 40 years old and above).
The Senior I-3 Dance (one partner must be 35 years old and the other 30 years old), Senior I-5 Dance (one partner must be 35 years old and the other 30 years old), Senior II-2 Dance (one partner must be 45 years old and the other 40 years old), Adult 3 Dance, Adult 4 Dance, Philippine Close and WDSF Close.
Each category includes the Latin and Standard disciplines.
The Latin Discipline covers ChaChaCha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive whereas the Standard Discipline covers the Slow Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot and Quickstep.
Added special categories are the University/School Teacher Event and the Corporate Event.
This event is organized by the DanceSport Team Cebu City (DTCC), that is composed of volunteer dance teachers who conduct regular free dancesport workshops and follow-through trainings in Cebu City’s 80 barangays including the remote mountainous areas.
