A POLICEMAN surrendered Sunday to the authorities after he accidentally shot a woman who happened to pass by at sitio Kalubihan in Barangay New Visayas in Panabo City where authorities were conducting a drug bust against a suspect in the area.
Police identified the fatality as Carmela Enad Prajele, 41, a housewife, of Purok 4 in Barangay Little Panay in Panabo.
The victim was on board a motorcycle when she was accidentally hit by a bullet at the back during the operation.
The policeman was identified as Police Officer 1 (PO1) Riche Balingit, a member of the Bunawan Police Station in Davao City.
A shootout ensued between Balingit and the drug suspect only identified as Dolphy when the victim passed by the area.
Initial Investigation conducted by Bunawan police showed that the incident happened around 10:45 a.m., Sunday, August 28.
The drug transaction was supposed to be conducted in Lasang, Davao City, when Dolphy requested to transfer to another place.
After Balingit, who acted as poseur buyer, received sachet of suspected shabu from the suspect, the latter pulled a firearm and attempted to shoot him prompting the policeman to retaliate, but missed the suspect and hit Prajelen instead.
The suspect hurriedly left on board a single Yamaha Mio heading to National Highway in Panabo City, while the police rushed the victim to Rivera Hospital in the same city.
The victim, however, was declared dead upon arrival by attending physicians.
Balingit is now under custody at the Panabo City Police Station, including his issued caliber .9mm pistol Glock bearing serial number 33323 for further investigation and proper disposition.
