Surging dengue cases alarm Iloilo City Hall

ILOILO City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog has ordered an all-out battle against the spread of dengue virus and to destroy all breeding places of virus carrying mosquitoes in all villages.

City Administrator Hernando Galvez said the mayor’s directive also mobilizes village officials not to ignore the threat of dengue as the disease mostly brought by mosquito bites already claimed the life of a five-year-old boy in Barangay Ingore, La Paz.

Records at the city health office (CHO) showed that as of January to August 2016, a total of 708 dengue cases and one death in contrast to the 2015 record of same period which claimed a total of 295 cases.

Galvez said CHO is giving out free larvicide for spraying in stagnant waters suspected as breeding places of dengue carrying mosquitoes aedes aegypti and aedes albopictus.

August, this year, has posted 279 cases and one death, while July posted 124 cases.

In 2015, August posted 84 cases and July with 79 cases.

Galvez said that preventive measures against the disease must be installed in the villages and to continue the 3 o’clock habit of cleaning the surroundings including the drainage system in flushing out and destroy the mosquitoes.

All water containers such as sardine tin cans, plastic bottles, and unused household containers must be turned over so that mosquitoes will have no place to breed.

The city administrator said the battle against dengue is a responsibility of everybody to ensure their villages are clean and safe from dengue.
