La Trinidad eyes construction of slaughterhouse

IF BUDGET permits, the Municipal Council of La Trinidad in Benguet is considering construction of a public slaughterhouse soon.

The facility is now a priority for the capital town following a proposed ordinance to regulate the operation of slaughterhouses or abattoir within the valley.

Committee on agriculture chairperson Councilor Renato Tereng said the LGU can study the idea of a government-operated abattoir if budget and locations can be properly sourced.

To date, only two local privately owned abattoir is accredited by the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) located in barangay Bahong and Shilan operates in the town.

In their study, around 200 pigs, cows, goats, etc. are being processed per day in just one of them, which supplies the whole municipality including the nearby places like Tublay and Baguio City.

“This is actually going to boost the economy of the province adding more revenue to the local government at the same time it will help developing and generating the needs for the application of the Valley to become a full pledged city,” Tereng explained.

“However our focus right now is to pass the ordinance which will regulate this kind of business for us to adopt and demonstrate the practice of producing quality meat,” he added.

Tereng added the LGU is still trying to locate an area for the proposed abattoir.

A proposed site within the Benguet State University was earlier planned but past administration deemed it not feasible.

The option to construct the facility near the Benguet Agri-Pinoy Trading Center in Barangay Pico has also been turned down due to its proximity to residential areas.
