FOR more than two decades now, SunStar Davao has established itself as the forerunner among the community newspapers in Davao Region and it has since continued to be the leader in delivering news to the Dabawenyos as well as the neighboring provinces.
The newspaper, even when it was still known as Ang Peryodiko Dabaw, has been championing stories, winning people's preferences. It became the first community newspaper using desktop publishing as early as 1989, when everyone else were using typesetting machines.
When SunStar group took over in 1995, SunStar Davao led the pack by becoming the first online among all affiliates. That was long before the SunStar News Exchange was organized to take care of the network’s online presence.
Aside from the website www.sunstar.com.ph, SunStar has ePapers of its affiliates, including Davao, and SunStar Davao maintains a highly visited and followed Facebook and Twitter, bringing the community media work to all platforms.
With the prestige and honor that the paper has built throughout the years, it is home to more than 80 awards from various award giving body both from local and national.
SunStar Davao has earned citations from various government agencies as well which includes the Social Security System having been cited as one of the most compliant SSS contributors in the region, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for its support in the different projects that the agency implements, the Davao City Police Office for its strong stance in promoting peace and order in the city, from the So Kim Cheng Foundation, and Davao City Sports Council for its undying support for sports development.
The paper has included in its list two more recognition from the 2015 Civic Journalism Community Press Awards of the Philippine Press Institute (PPI) for Best in Business and Economic Reporting in the local daily category, its second in a row. It has also won Best in Photojournalism in the local daily category.
With the birth of the new media where print industry has been challenged, SunStar Davao stood still as it started adapting to the digital platform through the SunStar website which saw the first few online publications in 2010.
Bolstering its bid as one of the most versatile media platforms in the region, SunStar Davao has also launched its SunStar Davao E-Paper which is now available at the Google and Apple apps stores.
SunStar Davao came close to the hearts of Dabawenyos when it chronicled the different cultures, personalities, economy and landscape through the re-launch of the SunStar Davao Yearbook in 2013.
SunStar Davao is here to stay.
True to its slogan, SunStar Davao remains and will remain above its competition as it is bent on leveling up its standards and service to appease the ever-growing demands of the community.
