SCREENING. It was two Saturdays ago that 11 individuals that are into different fields of interest and careers screened a total of 78 entries for next year’s Cebu Popular Music Festival. The six-hour task was done at the Alumni Office of the University of the Visayas where its president, Atty. Eduardo Gullas, sits as chair of the Cebu Arts Foundation Inc. It was in 1980, during his watch as Cebu governor, that the songwriting competition was started. Gullas is also the incumbent mayor of Talisay City. The screening was facilitated by Gani and Gloria Villarojo of Soundtraxx Production Studio and ably assisted by Angel Sua Abella, Bea Daitol, Roland Villarosa and other staff.
TOP 12. Our task wasn’t easy as we had to intently listen to the entries in order for us to pick the top 12. There were 39 entries in the Awit sa Gugma (Ballad) category, 16 and 23 in the Tingog sa Kabataan and Mga Huni sa Kasingkasing genres, respectively. It was explained by Ma’am Gloria that in the Tingog sa Kabataan genre, the entries should be interpreted by children themselves (as contestants) as these songs are really for them.
SONGS. So after a substantial time spent deliberating on the top 12, we chose the following songs and their composers and lyricists to make it to the magic 12. In the Awit sa Gugma (Ballad) genre: Unta Masayran Mo by Fernando Rabutan, Nagpahilayo by Hernando Maniwan, Good Luck Na Lang by Yoojin Raye Anthony Burgos and Queenieroseyve Gadores Quijano Alegado and Paso by Glicerio Germudo Jr. and Andro Banate. In the Huni sa Kasingkasing (Other Genres): Gugmang Maka... by Russel Alegado and Ronil Vincent Watin, Ngano Man, Amiga? by Erwin Lirazan, Mobunok Man Ang Uwan by Neil Salarda and John Peterson Villarin and Uyab Ta Pero Dili Ta Magsaba by Jesson Albaran. In the Tingog sa Kabataan category: Asa Ra Man Kana by Fr. Lyndon Ruiz, Tatay, Giyahan Mo Kami by Clefford Ray Duran, Singgit Kabataan by Emmanuel Abellana and Kabataan, Huni sa Paglaom by Dennis Martin.
PANEL. Aside from this writer, the other members of the screening panel were singer/musical arranger Elvis Somosot of Musikinesis Productions; vocal coach ChaCha Blanco of ChaCha101 Music Studio; singer/composer Irene Bacus; actress/veteran songbird Baby Condeno of Jazz ‘n Bluz and Ola Restobar; violinist, composer and choir director Britz Bryan Briones; composer/singer Jade Castro; violin teacher and Virtuoso School of Music owner Hannah Go; vocal health mentor and special events vocal entertainer Dr. Ian Fruto Teodorico and Sun.Star Cebu and Superbalita entertainment columnist Roger Serna.
SHOW. Here’s an exciting show that we should not miss to watch because no less than Asia’s Queen of Songs Pilita Corrales is the featured performer. As part of Golden Prince Hotel & Suites’ Bulawanong Dekada (Golden Decade) celebration, Pilita will stage the show on Sept. 30, starting at 7 p.m. with special guest performers Stephanie Patana Mananquil and Kwin & Kim Artist. Tickets are only P1,500 apiece, and that already includes a gourmet dinner before the concert starts. Well, with Pilita on centerstage, expect an evening of soothing love songs.
