A NEWLY-proclaimed village official was killed while a businessman was wounded in a gun attack in Isabela City, Basilan, the police reported Monday, September 12.
Isabela City Police Chief Jerome Afuyog Jr. identified the slain village official as Omar Asahad. Wounded was Hairuddin Tahir, a businessman.
Afuyog said the victims were shot around 7:25 a.m. Monday at Purok 5 in the village of La Piedad, Isabela City, Basilan.
Investigation showed the victims were aboard a motorcycle driven by Pelayo Buenbrazo on the way home when shot by one of two men riding in tandem on another motorcycle that overtook them.
The victims just came from a mosque as they attended the prayer marking the celebration of Eid’l Adha.
Asahad died on the spot, while Tahir was rushed to the hospital.
Buenbrazo was unscathed.
Afuyog said they believe the motive of the incident was political since Asahad was just proclaimed as the elected chairman of the village of Mebak, Sumisip.
He said Asahad, who won in an electoral protest, is set to be installed on Tuesday, September 13, as the new chairman of Mebak.
