Youth elections set on April 25

THE Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) election will be on April 25, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said.

The gun ban takes effect at the start of the election period on April 10 and will be lifted on May 10.

The filing of certificates of candidacy will be on April 11, 13 and 14 while the campaign period will start on April 15 and end on April 23.

Candidates are required to submit from April 26 to May 25 their statements on campaign spending and the contributions they received.

The filing of statements of contributions and expenditures will be on April 26 to May 25.

The Comelec promulgated Resolution 9934 last Tuesday amending Comelec Resolution 9930, which set the start of the SK election period today.

Meanwhile, Provincial Election Officer Ferdinand Gujilde said the Synchronized Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections Act awaits the signature of President Benigno Aquino III.

He said the measure resetting the SK Elections to 2016 was received by the Office of the President on March 4 but has not been signed yet.

“If the President does not act on it until April 4 or 30 days after it becomes a law,” he said.

He said that if it becomes law, the SK elections will be in the last Monday of October 2016.

The bill, which seeks to have synchronized barangay and SK elections, was passed by the Senate in February.

Gujilde said that the election period for this year’s SK polls was shortened to 15 days instead of 30 to give the President ample time to sign the bill.

If the election will be reset to October 2016, Gujilde said more SK voters will be taken out from the list because of their age. (With USJ-R Mass Comm intern Jasmin Marie Ylaya)
