BIR eyeing tax exemption for raw sugar

DEPUTY Commissioner Clint Aranas of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) said their agency is now trying to resolve the tax exemption for raw sugar.

He said the proposal is being deliberated in Congress and that BIR’s position is also for exemption.

However, Aranas said the tax reform package suggested by the Department of Finance is to put taxes on sweeteners.

“So somehow that will also affect us,” said the BIR official, who was in Bacolod City Thursday, September 15.

Meanwhile, Aranas said the additional salaries for police and military personnel pledged by President Rodrigo Duterte will be taken from the increase in taxes on petroleum products especially gasoline and diesel.

“We’re also looking at withdrawing some exemptions on big corporations especially some that are enjoying some tax incentives. They are trying to review that and another source is sin taxes on alcohol,” he added.

He said the proposals are now with Congress so the implementation would depend on when these will be approved.
