P20M eyed for Baguio night market relocation

NIGHT market days at the Harrison Road are numbered.

Mayor Maurico Domogan is eyeing relocation for the night market in a bid to ease traffic as well as to declog the city streets of waste left by irresponsible vendors.

Domogan said there are vendor not willing to cooperate with regulations on sanitation and waste disposal, which leaves the road area filthy in the morning.

"It is a privilege we gave you space and a feasible means of livelihood," Domogan said.

The City Engineering Office suggested the areas within Burnham Park are being eyed to relocate the now popular night market, which uses one lane of Harrison road come sundown.

A budget of P20 million is eyed to fund the relocation as well as prepare the site for business.

Domogan said vendors without violations will be included in the list to be relocated and the budget has to be sourced initially before any relocation takes place.

For the past years, a night market has morphed into a destination of sorts, with vendors filling one lane of Harrison Road with stalls of dry goods and food.

One lane of the road closes at around 9pm nightly to give way for vendors to set up their makeshift shops. Trading goes on until past midnight.

The night market started early 2007 when vendors of ukay-ukay stalls along Calderon Street started selling their wares at night on makeshift tables as well as on the pavements.

Domogan acknowledge the income the night market brings to the city as well as the popularity of the destination, which is frequented by tourists.

A nightly regulation fee is being collected from the vendors who have decided to set up shop at the road.

Today, local authorities have since zoned the vendors to Harrison Road in a bid to keep the public safe as well as to put order in the vending, however, the group as ballooned and the goods have also seen a change.

Along the night market stretch, one can see a myriad of products apart from the original ukay-ukay, brand new ready to wear items, souvenirs, electronics, house wares, kitchen ware and jewelry, food stalls have also invaded the area selling street foods.
