Jaro sisters, 3 others bag golds in AFP-PNP-PCG Olympics

FIVE Dabawenyos including the Jaro sisters, Sonny Wagdos and Olympian Sheila Mae Perez clinched gold medals in the AFP-PNP-PCG Olympics 2016 athletics and swimming events at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City Thursday, September 15.

Private Criselyn Jaro pocketed three golds to lead the Philippine Army's (PA) overall championship in athletics.

She clocked 14 minutes and 30 seconds in women's 3,000-meter steeplechase then registered 18 minutes and 12 seconds in women's 5,000m run. She also helped the Armys women's 4X400 relay team to a golden finish.

Airman Sonny Wagdos, for his part, gave the Philippine Air Force (PAF) one gold in men's 5,000m after checking in at 15 minutes and 58 seconds and a silver in men's 1,500m with a time of 4:12.

Sergeant Roel Ano of PAF, a veteran coach from Davao City, said Wagdos's feat tied the gold haul of PAF and the PA with 15 each.

Ano, who copped the men's 10,000m walk bronze, said, "Last event ang 4x400m relay mao ang deciding game. Nakuha ng Army led by Jaro, champion ang Army by one medal. May 16 golds sila, kami 15 (The women's 4X400m relay was the deciding event and Jaro led the win for the Army who took the championship by just one gold. The Army had 16 golds, we got 15)."

Jaro joined the Army September last year while University of Mindanao's multi-titled trackster Wagdos was enlisted at PAF Sept. 3 this year.

Jaro's elder sister, Cynthia, also won the women's 5,000m walk gold and younger sister Cellie Rose, who turns 22 today, added two bronzes in women's 10,000m run and 5,000m run for PAF.

Former Brokenshire College standout Anthony Nerza, for his part, annexed the men's 3,000m steeplechase gold and the men's 10,000m run silver while Michael Constantino accounted for a men's 4X400m relay gold and 800m silver for PAF.

Sgt. Merasol Abad, who hails from Sasa, salvaged silvers in women's 5,000m run and 1,500m run while PA Private Christy Joy Capaniarihan got the women's 100m hurdles silver and 400m hurdles bronze.

"Lingaw kaayo ang dula Davao vs Davao ang labanan, Gahi jud mga taga Davao (It was really great seeing Davao runners competing against each other, Dabawenyos are really forces to reckon with)."

Meanwhile, Perez captured a gold in women's 200m freestlye event for the Philippine Coast Guard. The swimming competition also closed Thursday.

Perez said only two events were entered for the women's division.
